FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team opened up Sunshine State Conference play on a sour note as they lost on the road to the Rollins Tars Wednesday, 78-66.
For the second night in a row,
Max Papendieck (Sr., Adelaide, Australia) broke his career-high in points with 25. He nailed seven three-pointers in the contest and was the only Shark with over 10 field goal attempts, draining 50 percent of them.
Alex Gynes (Sr., Nowra, Australia) and
Ross Allsop (Sr., Sydney, Australia) each collected a team-high eight rebounds.
The Sharks (2-1) took an early lead in the first half as Papendieck sank five three-pointers over the first 15 minutes. The Sharks led by six points at the ten minute mark but quickly lost the lead. The Tars (2-1) would finish the period outscoring the Sharks 20-8, taking a six point lead at halftime.
Papendieck scored 19 points in the first half, the most he’s ever scored in a half. He shot 5-for-6 from the field and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Although the Shark were finding open looks, the rest of the team shot 4-for-20 from the floor and allowed 13 Rollins’ free throw attempts.
The Sharks cut the deficit to as low as three points at the start of the second half but the Tars controlled the majority of the period. Rollins would lead by as much as 14 points with 5:21 remaining on the clock. The Sharks would eventually cut that lead in half but could not put themselves back into contention.
After missing the first two games of the season,
Lukas Roesch (So., Sugar Grove, Ohio) made his season debut Wednesday. He scored 10 points, all coming in the second half, on 4-for-7 shooting and brought down four rebounds.
Lemar Dyer (Sr., Miami, Fla.) led the Sharks with seven assists, his season-high. He also shot 50 percent from the field and nabbed three steals, tying his season-high.
Teddy Tassy (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.) tied a career-high with three steals as well.
The Sharks will return home this Saturday at 7 p.m. to face Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. The game will immediately follow the conclusion of the NSU Tipoff Classic.
